This month has been a lot of fun in addition to a lot of learning.
The Christmas Tree book count was 104, congratulations to Aiden. The Gingerbread Man is still hiding, but this is the last day to search for him. Good Luck! The EngineerGirl writing contest is, for the first time, asking students to submit works of creative fiction.
We want stories about women and girls saving the day with their wits, skill, and whatever resources they can find to solve the problem. Maybe they are working alone, maybe they are part of an elite team. Maybe they just find themselves in an unusual situation that requires some innovative thinking. We want stories that inspire EngineerGirl readers to think, “I want to be able to do that” or “I can do that.” To enter the contest: Write an original, fictional story in which the main character is a female who uses engineering skills to solve a problem. There are three basic rules:
Remember: Writers spend time doing research to ensure that story characters — their clothes, their tools, and especially their actions — are authentic. Take time to learn about engineers and engineering. The better you understand the engineering design process, the better and more believable your story will be. You are also encouraged to include with your submission information on one or more resources your readers can go to for more information. For more information or to enter your submission visit the link below: https://www.engineergirl.org/10209/Contest Most of the time the Office 365 login will be first.last. However, there are certain instances where this is not the case. For example, if you have a more common name, such as Ann Jones, there may be more than one student in Cobb County with that name and then the login generated for you may be slightly different.

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries and highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week 2018 and will be held September 23–29.
Some of the most popular and prolific books of our time were once banned or challenged including classics such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Great Gatsby, OF Mice and Men, Gone With the Wind, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Lord of the Rings and current favorite reads (many of which have been made into movies) including Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Glass Castle, Gossip Girl, Twilight and even Captain Underpants. Our Reading Challenge for 6th and 7th grade begins Monday, September 10 and a donut breakfast is up for grabs! The 6th grade and 7th grade reading classes that log the most minutes from September 10 - October 10 will win donuts in the Library Learning Commons!
Minutes read in class, any required reading, homework or leisure reading count towards your reading minutes however, they need to be logged on Biblionasium! The goal is 1,000 total minutes for each student but every minute counts so make sure you're logging minutes whenever you read! You can login to Biblionasium by scanning the QR code below or visiting and logging into Destiny and then selecting Bibliolionasium when you click the "hamburger menu" on the top left corner. Come to the Library Learning Commons to participate in first quarters STEM Challenge! The Boat Challenge! Density of water is 1.0g/ml. For an object to float in water it must be less dense than water. We need you to build a ship using Legos that is capable of carrying the greatest number of pennies without sinking. How many pennies does your boat hold before it sinks? How could you have changed the design to hold more pennies? The student who builds the boat that holds the most pennies wins a prize! The Reading Challenge begins on September 10th, and ends October 10th. The reading classes on each grade level who read the most total minutes win a donut breakfast in the Library Learning Commons. Each individual must read 1000 minutes in one month. YOU CAN DO IT! Don't forget to login to Biblionasium and log your minutes! Can't wait to reward the winners! |
